Just like a car cannot move without fuel, your body requires the right nutrition to perform during class. It’s not as simple as consuming a healthy meal. Your body digests different foods at different rates so the food you select needs to be chosen according to the time you are training and the last thing you want is to be training on a full stomach.
Red meat takes three to five hours to digest, white meat takes two hours, dairy products takes one to two hours and carbohydrates can take up to 90 minutes to digest.
Your best option for quick energy will be fruits and veggies which takes only 30 minutes to digest. This will allow you to fuel your body closer to your training time without being sluggish while your body is still trying to work through the food in your stomach. The vitamins and minerals in fruits and veggies will nourish your body whilst the natural sugar will give you the energy boost that you need. Try to eat 60 to 90 minutes before your training session.
If you don’t have the chance to eat before your session and don’t want to train on an empty stomach then grab a quick snack with an energy boost such as bananas, apples, pears or grapes.
