When someone tells you they want Almond Milk in their coffee do you think about little almonds on a farm being squeezed to get all the milk out of them? Poor little things.
But no… that is not at all how it happens.
Almond Milk, and any other plant based milk is made by grinding a bean or nut, adding some water, flavouring and extra vitamins and minerals if necessary to make a delicious and nutritious liquid used for drinking, cooking and baking.
Great, so the milk isn’t squeezed out of them. But why should you choose plant based milk over cow’s milk?
If you are lactose intolerant then a plant based milk is the obvious substitute. For those who are capable of comfortably consuming cows milk but still exploring the options of avoiding the animal produced product, there are a wide variety of plant based options to choose from and great benefits to this decision.
Plant based milks are rich in vitamins and minerals, and yes, even calcium. A lot of plant based milks are fortified to add in extra minerals. But if you are looking for a naturally calcium-rich, dairy-free milk then Rice Milk is your answer. Rice Milk also has a sweet taste which makes it a great option for breakfast and baking.
Plant based milks are low in cholesterol and low in fat, containing less that half the fat of cow’s milk while at the same time providing you with a healthy combination of mono and polyunsaturated fats.
If it’s flavour you’re after then look no further. Coconut Milk is on top of the list with it’s delicious coconut taste and creamy texture, great for cooking and desserts. If coconuts are not for you then you have to try Cashew Nut Milk with it’s creamy texture and nutty flavour. Almond Milk is probably the most popular substitute at the moment and comes in a variety of altered flavours such as vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.
Still not convinced to try it?
While plant based milk is often more costly than cows milk, at Black Belt Coffee you can enjoy this nutritious substitute and no extra cost. So try something new, save a cow and give your body some delicious, healthy goodness.
